Paper Machine CD Profiler Conversion
The purpose of this project was to eliminate the "black box" computer
controlling the moisture and caliper cross dimensional (CD) profile on two paper machines.
The profile control was implemented in the plant’s standard control system,
consisting of a PLC and DCS combination.
Conversions of this type are infrequently done, so this was approached as an R&D
type of project. Control was moved to the PLC/DCS on a system by system basis, with a
backwards migration path always provided. Once the conversion of one paper machine was
successfully proven, the second machine was converted over on a single three day outage.
